Characterisation of output in human and social sciences

International seminar, 23 May 2018

The Human and Social Sciences (HSS) seminar held on 23 May 2018 at the OST enabled European researchers working in the field to exchange ideas from a bibliometric viewpoint and to consider the best way of including the specific characteristics of HSS in the measurement and evaluation of their scientific output.

The different speakers first established the diversity of HSS’ origins based on the history of the institutionalisation and the epistemological model of each discipline and highlighted the divergences among the HSS: standardisation of publication practices (monolingualism, single publication method) or local regime of production and dissemination of knowledge. In terms of evaluation, the contributions covered possible solutions and the in-depth examination required to take account of academic books, the epistemic model, alternative indicators and open databases.
