The impact of science on human activity as a whole is constantly growing and the sheer volume of scientific activity has increased continuously over recent decades. In this context, two prominent movements have come to define contemporary thinking about the way we approach science: an insistence upon the importance of rigour, probity and quality in the methods we use; and, concomitantly, a drive for greater transparency, openness and sharing of knowledge, embodied by the “Open Science” movement. This trend goes hand in hand with the affirmation and appropriation – at the institutional, collective and individual levels – of the core values of scientific practice: responsibility, universality, rigour, sharing and commitment to the common good.

The aim of this spring conference of the French Office for Research integrity (OFIS) in partnership with the Conference of University Presidents (CPU), the Committee for Open Science (CoSO), the CNRS and the Research Ethics and Integrity Council of Université Paris-Saclay (POLÉTHIS), is to share experiences and analyses, and to outline future actions capable of contributing to this dynamic. This conference will thus seek to identify opportunities for synergy between research integrity and open science, while also highlighting the pitfalls to be avoided.

In our exploration of these topics, the concept of open science will be considered in its broadest sense: accelerating the dissemination of knowledge, opening up scientific publications, opening up access to research data, participative science and social outreach, etc. This inaugural OFIS conference will primarily address issues relating to the opening up of publications and data. Violations of research integrity will also be addressed in all their diversity (fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, other shortcomings and questionable practices). This conference should enable us to identify a certain number of principles, criteria and modes of action conducive to the spread of essential best practices, and to the development and deployment of open science with unstinting respect for the principles of research integrity.
